Wiltshire Men Fail to Make Middleton Cup Semi's

Posted on Sat, 30 Jul 2011

Wiltshire men failed in their bid to reach Worthing in the last four of the Middleton Cup for the first time in eight years. They were beaten 117-104 by Berkshire in the quarter-finals of the inter-county championship on the neutral green at Oxford City and County last Saturday.

Wiltshire won on three of the six rinks skipped by Michael Snell (eight shots), Mel Biggs (five shots) and Mike Jackson (three shots) who was celebrating his 100th appearance for Wiltshire and only lost on Graham Shadwell’s rink by two shots. But suffered an eight shot loss on Mark Dyer’s and could not compensate for the 25-6 thrashing that Neil Smith’s quartet took against England international Robert Newman.

Wiltshire Men Set to Face Berkshire In Middleton Cup Quarters

Posted on Mon, 18 Jul 2011

In 5 days Wiltshire Men's Middleton Cup side will take on Berkshire for a place in the semi-final of the National Inter County Championship at the National finals held at Worthing in August.

Despite having to sit on the sidelines and just wait for results and events to unfold in their group their hope of reaching Worthing this year in the competition is still alive. Wiltshire finished top of the Group 4 West Section B thanks to Somerset doing them a very big favour at home at Winscombe B.C and beating Gloucestershire 123 (18pts) - 100 (4pts). This meant Wiltshire, with three wins and one loss the same as Somerset and Gloucestershire, pipped them both for top spot and qualification for the quarter-finals.

Wiltshire Face Tense Wait For Middleton Cup Fate

Posted on Thu, 30 Jun 2011

Wiltshire men have won their final Middleton Cup group match against Somerset 130-117 to make it three wins out of four - but their hopes of qualifying for the quarter-finals still hang in the balance.

Following Gloucestershire’s big 145-91 win over Herefordshire, Wiltshire can only sit back and hope that results go their way in the final group matches on July 9th. They need Somerset to beat Gloucestershire on aggregate and win on at least three rinks in order to qualify. One potential factor on Wiltshire's side is that Somerset will be playing at home in the deciding game. However, any win for Gloucestershire will condemn them to runners-up spot.

Wiltshire Suffer Narrow 2 Shot Defeat Against Gloucestershire in Middleton Cup

Wiltshire men’s hopes of success in the 2011 Middleton Cup hang in the balance following their 125-123 defeat away to Gloucestershire last weekend in their third group match. They only went down by two shots, however, they only collected five points out of a possible 22 from a draw and two winning rinks.

Wiltshire led 35-31 at five ends across the board but trailed 58-62 at ten and slid further back to trail by 15 shots, 100-115 at 18 ends. But a big final rally saw them nearly claw back the big deficit and only lose by two shots.

Wiltshire Hammer Herefordshire in Middleton Cup

Wiltshire men are still on course for a quarter-final place in the Middleton Cup after they followed up last week’s win over Bowls Dorset with another victory, this time over Herefordshire C.B.A, to make it two wins out of two in the West Section Group 4B of the national competition.

Wiltshire's Neil Smith Looks On

Wiltshire thrashed Herefordshire by 45 shots at Wootton Bassett B.C on Saturday, as they ran-out 137-92 victors. They were always in charge across the board, with Mike Jackson’s rink piling-up the shots. The Moonrakers led 30-21 at five ends and moved to 97-55 ahead at 15. They took the honours on five of the six rinks to collect 20 points out of 22 and set the early pace in Group 4B.

Snell Sets Bowls Wiltshire Landmark

Posted on Thu, 16 Jun 2011

Wootton Bassett bowler Dave Snell has re-written the Wiltshire record books by becoming the first player in Wiltshire Men’s Bowls history to make 100 Middleton Cup appearances. He currently stands at 101 appearances for Bowls Wiltshire, over a 28 year period, and is set to make it 102 on the 18th June when Wiltshire take on Gloucestershire.

Dave Snell

The 64-year-old Bassett club stalwart has been playing bowls for 32 years since 1979 when he gave up league rugby and chasing a low golf handicap. Snell made his Middleton Cup debut for Wiltshire in the inter-county championship way back in 1983 in the first match of that season away in Somerset at Weston-Super-Mare. He played at lead alongside present Bassett colleagues John Williamson and Richard Buckland with Ivan Danford as skip. They did not have to play against the legendary David Bryant but Snell’s rink still lost by one shot going down 20-19 as Wiltshire had to give second best in the match to Somerset 123-93.
